Woman Dies After Driving Into Retention Pond

The Delaware State Police are investigating a fatal crash near Magnolia that left a woman dead.

Officials said on Saturday, April 6, 2024, at approximately 11:58 p.m., a Chevrolet Trailblazer SUV was driving southbound on Clapham Road approaching Jury Drive, near the entrance to Barker’s Landing. For reasons still under investigation, the driver lost control of the SUV causing it to leave the road and drive into a retention pond, becoming submerged with her inside. Rescue crews were able the remove the driver from the SUV and begin lifesaving efforts.

The driver of the Chevrolet, a 46-year-old woman from Magnolia was taken to an area hospital with life-threatening injuries. On Sunday, April 7, 2024, she died from her injuries. Her name is being withheld until her family is notified.

The roadway was closed for approximately three hours while the scene was investigated and cleared.

The Delaware State Police Troop 3 Collision Reconstruction Unit continues to investigate this incident.
