The Delaware State Police are investigating a fatal crash involving an electric scooter that occurred in New Castle Sunday night that left one man dead.
Officials said on May 26, 2024, at approximately 8:46 p.m., a 2015 Honda Accord was traveling northbound in the left turn lane on New Castle Avenue at the intersection with Memorial Drive. At the same time, a Tifgalop K-8 electric scooter was traveling southbound on New Castle Avenue approaching the intersection with Memorial Drive.
Authorities said the area was dark at the time of the crash and the scooter had insufficient lighting. The operator of the Honda was unable to see the scooter approaching the intersection as the Honda attempted to make a left turn onto Memorial Drive. As a result, the front of the scooter struck the right side of the Honda in the intersection.
The rider of the scooter, identified as Zunwei Shao, 37, was not wearing a safety helmet or reflective clothing. He was transported to an area hospital, where he was pronounced dead.
The driver of the Honda, a 50-year-old female from Wilmington, was transported to an area hospital for evaluation.
The roadway was closed for approximately three hours while the scene was investigated and cleared.
