Police Say 18-Year-Old Student Brought Gun To School, Released On OR

Seaford Police Department officials said they arrested Fernando Etienne, 18, of Seaford, on weapons charges after a handgun and knife were found in his backpack at Seaford High School on Thursday.

According to authorities, the incident occurred on May 2, 2024, when Seaford High School staff members conducted a search of a student’s belongings during a disciplinary procedure. Authorities said they discovered a loaded handgun and a large knife concealed in a bag. The staff immediately notified the School Resource Officer, who responded by taking the student into custody and securing the weapons.

According to police, the student was transported to the Seaford Police Department, where he was charged with multiple offenses, including Carrying a Concealed Deadly Weapon (a firearm), Carrying a Concealed Deadly Weapon (a knife), Possession of a Firearm in a Safe Recreation Zone, and Possession of a Weapon in a Safe Recreation Zone. The authorities added that the defendant was presented to a judge from the Justice of the Peace Court 2 and subsequently released on his own recognizance.
