Rider Killed In Smyrna Motorcycle Accident

Delaware State Police are investigating a fatal motorcycle crash that occurred in Smyrna on Thursday afternoon.

Officials said on May 30, 2024, at approximately 1:12 p.m., a Jeep Cherokee was eastbound on Sweet Corn Lane, stopped for the stop sign at southbound, South Dupont Boulevard. At the same time, a Harley Davidson motorcycle was driving southbound on South Dupont Boulevard in the left lane, approaching Sweet Corn Lane. Officials said the preliminary investigation showed that the Jeep pulled away from the stop sign to travel across South Dupont Boulevard into the path of the motorcycle, as a result, the front of the motorcycle hit the driver’s side of the Jeep.

The driver of the Jeep, a 69-year-old man and a passenger, a 69-year-old woman, both of Smyrna were taken to an area hospital for minor injuries.

The driver of the Harley Davidson motorcycle, a 59-year-old man from Dover, was pronounced dead at the scene. His name is being withheld until his family is notified.

The roadway was closed for approximately three hours while the scene was investigated and cleared.
