Update On Sunday’s Crash That Closed Route 1

Delaware State Police investigated a rollover crash that caused significant traffic delays on Sunday.

Rescue crews from Delaware City and Christiana Fire Companies, along with New Castle County Paramedics, responded to the scene on Route 1 Northbound near the Kirkwood Saint Georges Overpass shortly before 3:15 p.m.

Upon arrival, emergency responders found vehicles in both the northbound and southbound lanes of Route 1. A 56-year-old male driver, who self-extricated from one of the vehicles, was initially expected to be transported by a BLS ambulance for minor injuries. However, he and a 16-year-old passenger from the same vehicle eventually refused transport to the hospital.

All individuals involved in the crash declined medical transport, and the scene was subsequently turned over to the Delaware State Police for investigation and clearing.

The Delaware Department of Transportation (DelDOT) reported that both the southbound and northbound lanes of Route 1 at the Kirkwood Saint Georges Overpass were closed due to the crash.
