The Fraternal Order of Police (FOP) Lodge 20 has publicly addressed speculation regarding the ongoing negotiations between Middletown police officers and local government officials.
Recent rumors posted on local pages warned of a potential mass exodus of police officers from the Middletown Police Department.
According to the union, nearby departments are offering signing bonuses and higher pay, making them attractive alternatives for Middletown officers.
In a statement released by FOP Lodge 20, President Joseph Womer and Vice President Steven West emphasized their unwavering commitment to providing exemplary police services to the Middletown community. They underscored the importance of securing a fair and competitive salary adjustment to retain and attract skilled officers.
According to the FOP, over the past six months, the Middletown Police Department has experienced significant personnel losses, with six officers transferring to other departments offering better compensation packages, including higher salaries and additional benefits such as take-home vehicles. This trend has exacerbated staffing shortages, compelling the remaining officers to work mandatory overtime to maintain service levels.
The City of Newarkâs police department recently joined the New Castle County police department in providing the take home vehicle benefit to their officers.
Despite these challenges, the FOP reassured the public that the department’s officers remain dedicated to the safety and security of Middletown residents. The officers’ commitment to their duties has not wavered, even as they navigate the difficulties posed by the current staffing situation.
The FOP said they are hopeful that a resolution will be reached soon.
