Authorities are currently investigating an attempted robbery similar to the recent ATM smash-and-grab incidents that occurred over the weekend.
The Cecil County Sheriff’s Office is leading the investigation into an early Thursday morning incident at the Appleton Market located at the intersection of Appleton Road and Fletchwood Road, just over the Maryland state line in Elkton.
According to initial reports, a group in a white van, dressed in dark hoodies, smashed through the store’s glass front, causing significant damage. The ATM inside the store appears to have been struck and damaged; however, it does not seem to have been compromised.
A van matching the description of the vehicle used in the attempted robbery was found near the state line on Old Baltimore Pike. The van appeared to have skidded out of control and landed in the grass. Maryland authorities are currently guarding the vehicle.
Officials have not yet released detailed information regarding the incident or whether they believe this attempted ATM theft is connected to similar incidents in New Castle County, Delaware, over the weekend.
This is a developing story, and more information will be provided as it becomes available.
