Motorcycle Passenger Killed Monday Identified

The Delaware State Police are investigating a fatal motorcycle crash that occurred last night in Wilmington that left one man dead.

Officials said on June 17, 2024, at approximately 9:04 p.m., a silver 2010 Toyota Yaris was traveling in the left lane of East Newport Pike eastbound passing the intersection with Curtis Avenue. At the same time, a 2003 Kawasaki motorcycle was also traveling in the left lane of East Newport Pike eastbound, approaching the rear of the Toyota. The preliminary investigation showed the front of the Kawasaki struck the rear of the Toyota at an apparent high rate of speed, causing the motorcyclist and his passenger to be ejected.

The passenger on the Kawasaki, 32-year-old Jose Atenco-Meneses of Wilmington was taken to an area hospital, where he was pronounced dead. The motorcyclist, a 28-year-old man from Wilmington, Delaware, was taken to an area hospital for critical injuries.

The driver of the Toyota, a 19-year-old woman from Wilmington, Delaware, was taken to an area hospital for non-life-threatening injuries.

The roadway was closed for approximately 4 hours while the scene was investigated and cleared
