Officials said on Saturday, at approximately 4:50 a.m., troopers were dispatched to the Wilmington Country Club at 4825 Kennett Pike in response to reports of an unknown man sleeping in the back of a Cadillac Escalade.
Delaware State Police arrested Larry Austin, a 40-year-old resident of Wilmington on felony gun charges following an investigation into suspicious activity early Saturday morning.
Upon arrival, the responding trooper observed the Escalade parked at the entrance of the country club with the driver’s door ajar. The trooper approached the vehicle and opened the rear passenger door, at which point the occupant, later identified as Larry Austin, fell out onto the concrete. As he fell, the trooper noticed a black handgun on the seat where Austin had been sitting police said.
Austin exhibited multiple signs of impairment and was taken into custody without incident. Officials said a computer check revealed that the Taurus G2C 9mm handgun found in the SUV had been reported stolen by the New Castle County Police Department in May 2022. Further investigation determined that Austin is a convicted felon and is prohibited from possessing a firearm or ammunition according to police.
Austin was transported to Troop 1, where he was charged with several crimes, including possession of a firearm or ammunition by a person prohibited (felony), carrying a concealed deadly weapon (felony), receiving a stolen firearm (felony), possession of a firearm while under the influence of alcohol, and criminal trespass in the third degree. He was arraigned by Justice of the Peace Court 11 and released after posting a $13,200 cash bond.
