Sunday Storms Left As Many As 18,000 Without Power

Storms with heavy rain and strong winds swept through northern Delaware and southeast Pennsylvania just before 5:00 PM on Sunday, leaving thousands without power, causing injuries, and prompting cleanup efforts across the regions.

As the storms moved through the area, reports of downed trees and wires, blocked roads, and widespread power outages began to flood in. At the peak of the outages, as many as 18,000 customers were without power. By Monday, approximately 1,500 customers in southeast Pennsylvania were still awaiting power restoration, and just over 430 in northern Delaware remained without electricity.

First State Update readers shared dozens of photos on Facebook, showing damage across the area. Large trees were downed near the Minquadale Fire Company fire station and at a home in Newport. Additionally, tents collapsed at the Chinese American Community Center in Hockessin late Sunday afternoon, reportedly injuring several people. At least one patient was transported to the hospital.

The National Weather Service issued a severe thunderstorm warning for Northern New Castle County around 4:45 saying there was the possibility of 60-mile-per-hour wind gusts.
