On June 5, 2024, Newark Police responded to the TD Bank at 230 East Delaware Avenue for a report of a fraud. Upon arrival, officers were advised that a female entered the bank and attempted to withdraw funds with a fictitious identification card, according to Lt. Andrew Rubin. The female was still present at the bank and was taken into custody without incident.
Rubin said an investigation determined that the female came to the bank from New York with an identification card in the name of a different female, but with the suspect’s photograph on it. The suspect attempted to withdraw funds in the name of the female, but was declined by the bank when they believed the transaction to be suspicious.
Upon a search of the suspect, officers located a fictitious credit card and fictitious identification said Rubin. Officers identified the suspect as Evelyn Forti, 49, of Hempstead, NY. Additional male suspects were with Forti at the time of this incident. Their involvement is under further investigation.
Yesterday sources in law enforcement told FSU that they were alerted to the incident, however, it was described to them as a bank robbery. In response to an email this morning, Rubin told us that it was a fraud, not a bank robbery.
Forti was transported to Newark Police headquarters where she was charged with:
- Identity Theft
- Attempted Theft Over $1,500
- Forgery Second Degree (4 counts)
- Conspiracy Second Degree
- Criminal Impersonation
Forti appeared before Justice of the Peace Court #2 by video and was released on $23,000 unsecured bail.
