On Tuesday a new law that will expand access to free breakfast and lunch for students who would otherwise receive reduced-price meals under the federal School Breakfast Program and National School Lunch Program.
The legislation aims to support the academic performance and overall well-being of students by ensuring they have access to nutritious meals. Approximately 2,500 students statewide will benefit from this initiative, which will take effect for the 2024-2025 school year.
The measure addresses food insecurity, a significant factor impacting students’ ability to learn and succeed. Access to nutritious meals is linked to better academic performance, improved behavior, and higher levels of success both in and out of the classroom.
The new law also underscores the importance of addressing factors outside the classroom that influence education, particularly hunger. Ensuring that vulnerable students have access to nutritious meals creates a more equitable and supportive learning environment.
