Just In: Mom, Two Babies Seriously Burned In Monday Night Crash

File

On Monday, at approximately 7:30, the Wilmington Fire Department responded to the intersection of A Street and South Walnut Street following a report of an automobile fire. Engine Company 2 was en route when the New Castle County Fire Dispatch Center informed them that children were reportedly trapped inside the burning vehicle.

Upon arrival, fire department personnel found the vehicle fully engulfed in flames. They were notified that employees of a nearby auto detailing shop had managed to rescue two children from the vehicle. Firefighters quickly began treating the injured and worked to extinguish the fire.

Emergency medical services arrived shortly after, and the burn patients were transferred to their care. The two children, an 8-month-old and a 5-year-old, suffered extensive second and third-degree burns and were transported to Nemours Children’s Trauma Center in serious condition. The driver of the car, the children’s mother, had managed to escape the vehicle but sustained extensive second and third-degree burns. She was transported to Christiana Trauma Center for treatment.

Due to a fuel spill from the vehicle, the Delaware Department of Natural Resources and Environmental Control (DNREC) was requested at the scene to manage the situation.

For updates on the conditions or outcomes of the patients, inquiries should be directed to the respective medical facilities.
