Man, 27, Airlifted To Burn Center After Explosion

The Delaware State Fire Marshal’s Office has investigated an explosion incident that injured a 27-year-old Sussex County man.

The incident occurred shortly before 7:30 Sunday evening in the 30000 block of E. Trap Pond Road in Laurel.

The Laurel Fire Department responded to the 911 call from the residence and found an individual had sustained burns to his head and back. They also located an actively burning metal drum on the property. The injured subject was flown from the scene to Crozer-Chester Medical Center in Upland, Pennsylvania by the Delaware State Police Aviation Division.

Deputy State Fire Marshals responded to the scene to conduct an investigation into the injury and determined several aerosol spray cans had been discarded into the burning barrel, resulting in an explosion and ensuing flash fire.

The condition of the burned subject was not officially released, however, initial reports from the scene indicate the man suffered burn injuries to his back. He was in stable condition at the time of transport.

There were no damages reported to any property as a result of the explosion.
