A Wilmington man was arrested following a robbery at a Valero gas station in Wilmington yesterday morning.
Officials said on August 15, 2024, Delaware State Police responded to a robbery at the Valero gas station on McKennan’s Church Road at approximately 11:18 a.m. The suspect, identified as 53-year-old Luis Santiago, approached a woman at the gas pumps, forcibly took her cell phone, and attempted to flee the scene. Good Samaritans intervened, restraining Santiago as he tried to escape. In the struggle, Santiago threw the stolen phone, damaging it police said. Both Santiago and the victim sustained minor injuries during the incident.
After being detained, Santiago was transported to a local hospital for treatment of injuries sustained during the altercation. While en route, he became disorderly, kicking an EMT in the ambulance. His combative behavior continued at the hospital, where he resisted staff efforts to assist him, resulting in a minor injury to one of the hospital workers.
Following his release from the hospital, Santiago was taken to Delaware State Police Troop 2, where he was charged with Robbery 2nd Degree (Felony), Offensive Touching of an EMT, Assault 3rd Degree, and Criminal Mischief. He was arraigned at Justice of the Peace Court 11 and subsequently committed to Howard R. Young Correctional Institution on a $7,100 cash bond.
