The Delaware State Police are investigating a three-vehicle crash that occurred Wednesday night on Christiana Road in New Castle, resulting in the deaths of two people.
Officials have charged the driver of the Kia involved in the fatal collision, Dejuan Robinson, a 26-year-old from Wilmington.
According to authorities, the incident unfolded around 11:20 p.m. when a 2008 Dodge Grand Caravan, was turning on to Airport Road from the eastbound lanes of Christiana Road and was struck by a 2022 Kia K5, driven by Robinson, according to police.
The Kia, which was reportedly traveling at a high speed, ran a red light and collided with the Dodge as it entered the intersection. The impact caused the Dodge to spin and roll over, leading to the deaths of a 29-year-old Karisma Elivo-Stevens, and her daughter, 10-year-old Zamiyah Elivo, both from New Castle. They were pronounced dead at the scene. The remaining 4 children, an 8-year-old, a 5-year-old, a 3-year-old, and a 1-year-old, were taken to an area hospital for non-life-threatening injuries.
Robinson, sustained serious injuries and was taken to an area hospital. A third vehicle, a 2020 Hyundai Tucson, was also involved in the crash after the Kia crossed a cement median and struck it. The driver of the Hyundai, a 43-year-old woman from Bear, was also hospitalized with serious injuries.
Robinson has been written about in the news for for years due to runs ins with law enforcement. In January 2019, Robinson’s name was again the subject of a high-profile police chase that spanned multiple states. The pursuit ended in South Philadelphia after the vehicle, Robinson was suspected to be in, collided with several others, injuring multiple people, including a 3-year-old boy and several police officers. Although police later said that they could not confirm that Robinson was in the vehicle during the chase, he remained a person of interest in several investigations according to officials at the time.
There are several more news stories that are associated with a Dejuan Robinson, dating back to 2013. We’re working on an update for those stories.
On August 22, 2024, Robinson was charged with multiple crimes, including two counts of Murder in the Second Degree, Possession of a Deadly Weapon During the Commission of a Felony, Disregarding a Police Officer’s Signal, and Failure to Stop at a Red Light. He was arraigned by Justice of the Peace Court 11 taken into custody on a $906,050 cash bond.
Court records show that Robinson was officially taken into custody at 7:26 a.m., although sources tell FSU that he remains hospitalized due to injuries sustained in the crash.
According to court records, Robinson was awaiting multiple court dates at the time of the crash. Delaware State Police reported that troopers had attempted to stop Robinson’s vehicle shortly before the fatal collision on Wednesday, but lost sight of the Kia, which was not being actively pursued at the time of the accident police said.
