Delaware State Police have apprehended 21-year-old Shannon Black of Newark on charges of drug offenses and resisting arrest following a traffic stop in Newark early Wednesday morning.
Officials said on July 31, 2024, around 1:00 a.m., members of the New Castle County Governor’s Task Force observed a black Honda Accord with an equipment violation traveling on Churchmans Road in Newark. A computer check revealed that the Honda lacked a tint waiver, and its registered owner, Shannon Black, had a suspended license. Detectives confirmed Black’s identity when he exited the driver’s seat after parking at Royal Farms, located at 457 Stanton Christiana Road, Newark. As Black returned to his vehicle, detectives initiated a traffic stop, which he disregarded, fleeing the parking lot in the Honda and striking a Task Force vehicle in the process police said.
The ensuing pursuit saw Black driving recklessly until a flat tire, caused by crashing into a curb, forced him to stop at the Red Roof Inn parking lot. Despite commands to surrender, Black fled on foot towards a nearby wooded area police said. He was ultimately subdued and taken into custody after a taser deployment.
A search of Black revealed 24 bags containing approximately 0.168 grams of heroin. Nearby, authorities also recovered a clear plastic bag containing approximately 18.9 grams of crack cocaine police said. After being medically cleared at a local emergency center, Black was taken to Troop 2. He faced several charges, including possession with intent to deliver controlled substances, resisting arrest, disregarding a police officer’s signal, reckless endangering, possession of a controlled or counterfeit substance, and driving while suspended or revoked. He was arraigned by Justice of the Peace Court 11 and committed to Howard R. Young Correctional Institution on a $26,500 cash bond.
