Officials Update Crash That Closed I-495 Tuesday Morning

The Delaware State Police are investigating a crash that closed I-495 early Tuesday.

At 6:20 a.m. on October 29, 2024, emergency responders were dispatched to a serious motor vehicle collision on Interstate 495 southbound, south of the East 12th Street overpass.

Initial reports indicated multiple vehicles involved in a collision, including a rollover with entrapment.

Upon arrival, New Castle County Paramedics, Wilmington Fire Department, and Saint Francis EMS found a three-vehicle accident involving a tractor-trailer and two passenger cars. Both passenger vehicles had overturned due to the impact.

The driver of one passenger vehicle, a 37-year-old male, was trapped within the wreckage. Wilmington firefighters extricated him in less than 10 minutes, allowing New Castle County Paramedics to administer immediate medical care. The patient sustained a head injury and was transported to a local hospital, where he remains in stable condition.

Interstate 495 lanes were temporarily impacted during the emergency response.
