Manslaughter Charge In Death Of Wilmington Man

Wilmington Police have arrested a man in connection with an October fatal assault.

Police were notified about an assault that had occurred on October 20 at approximately 2:04 p.m. in the 2100 block of North Market Street. The victim, who has been identified as 60-year-old Edward Wiggins, was transported to the hospital, where he succumbed to his injuries on October 22.

The case was assigned to Detective Derek Haines of the Criminal Investigations Division, and the investigation continued in conjunction with the Delaware Division of Forensic Sciences. On October 23, it was determined that the victim died as a result of the assault police said Wednesday.

Through the course of his continuing investigation, Detective Haines identified 48-year-old Nathaniel Harris as a suspect in connection with the assault police announced. On November 4, Detective Haines presented the case to the New Castle County Grand Jury, which returned an indictment. On November 19, Harris was located by members of the Uniformed Services Division and was taken into custody without incident.

Harris has been charged with Manslaughter. He was arraigned in Justice of the Peace Court 11 and was committed to the Howard R. Young Correctional Institution on $500,000 cash-only bail.

Wilmington Police did not previously release information about Wiggin’s death to the public.
