Woman Succumbs To Injuries Suffered In June Shooting, Two Facing Attempted Murder

Wilmington Police have arrested two men in connection with a fatal shooting incident on June 27.

At approximately 11:05 p.m. on June 27, police responded to the 300 block of East 23rd Street in reference to a reported shooting. Upon arrival, they located a 57-year-old female gunshot victim who was transported to the hospital in critical condition.

The victim, identified as Michelle Clifton, succumbed to her injuries last week.

The case was assigned to Detective Jessica Gledhill of the Criminal Investigations Division. Officials said through her investigation, Detective Gledhill identified 26-year-old Gyheim Fitzgerald and 22-year-old Ke’shawn Fortune as suspects, and warrants for their arrest were obtained on October 29.

On October 30, Fitzgerald was taken into custody without incident by members of the Uniformed Services Division in the 300 block of East 23rd Street. On November 1, Fortune was located and apprehended by the New Castle County Police Department.

Fitzgerald has been charged with Attempted Murder (First Degree), Possession of a Firearm During the Commission of a Felony, Possession of a Firearm by a Person Prohibited (two counts), Conspiracy (First Degree), and three counts of Criminal Mischief. He was arraigned in the New Castle County Court of Common Pleas and committed to the Howard R. Young Correctional Institution on $568,796 cash-only bail.

Fortune has been charged with Attempted Murder (First Degree), Possession of a Firearm During the Commission of a Felony, Possession of a Firearm by a Person Prohibited (two counts), Conspiracy (First Degree), and three counts of Criminal Mischief. He was arraigned in Justice of the Peace Court 11 and committed to the Howard R. Young Correctional Institution on $1,135,500 cash-only bail.

Following the victim’s death, investigators are collaborating with the Delaware Department of Justice to upgrade the charges against both suspects.
