On Tuesday, parents that have children that attend schools in the Milford School District received an email addressing an accidental discharge of a firearm by a district constable. The incident occurred in a private staff workroom during school hours. The district declined to mention what school the incident occurred at.
The email sent to parents stated:
“Milford School Community,
We regret to inform you there was an accidental discharge of a firearm in a private staff workroom this afternoon by a district constable. While there were no injuries and no threat to the safety or security of our school, staff, or students, we are deeply concerned by this event. This incident did not impact our instructional areas with access to staff and students; however, we feel a responsibility to be transparent with our school community.
While we understand this is concerning, please be assured that our constable staff receive thorough on-going certification and training regularly. We are working closely with our law enforcement partners to investigate this isolated incident thoroughly and to ensure all necessary safety measures are in place and followed with fidelity.
This is an on-going personnel investigation and no additional details are able to be shared at this time. Thank you for your understanding and support.”
This incident echoes a similar event at Stanton Middle School in Wilmington, which occurred last month. In that case, a school constable accidentally discharged a firearm in a hallway while repositioning the weapon in its holster an email said at the time. There were no injuries, and students were safely in their classrooms at the time. The school district responded with a similar statement.
