At approximately 10:20 p.m. on Tuesday, firefighters from across New Castle County were dispatched to an apartment complex on Gregory Drive in Newark following the activation of a fire alarm. The alarm reportedly sounded when a heater was turned on inside one of the units.
Among the responding units was a team from the Minquadale Fire Company. En route to the scene, the Minquadale crew was involved in a traffic collision on Route 40 near the intersection with Route 1.
Initial reports from the scene indicated that one individual in the vehicle that collided with the firetruck was briefly trapped. Emergency responders worked quickly to extricate the individual. The condition of the person involved has not been disclosed. It’s also unclear if any firefighters were injured during the crash.
The section of Route 40 near Route 1 was temporarily closed to allow for the investigation and clearance of the accident scene.
Meanwhile, the original call for the fire alarm at the apartment complex on Gregory Drive was resolved shortly after firefighters arrived. Crews determined that there was no fire, and the scene was cleared without further incident.
