State Police Say Cade Facing Six Counts Of Shoplifting From Home Depot

Cerron Cade, Director of Delaware’s Office of Management and Budget (OMB), was arrested on December 13, 2024, on six counts of misdemeanor shoplifting according to the Delaware State Police.

Officials said the arrest comes in connection with multiple incidents at a Home Depot located at 3600 Miller Road in Wilmington.

“Following a thorough investigation and consultation with the Delaware Department of Justice, it was determined that there was sufficient probable cause to issue an arrest warrant.” Delaware State Police PIO Lieutenant India Sturgis told FSU.

Sturgis said that Cade turned himself in at Troop 2. He was arraigned by Justice of the Peace Court 2 and released on his own recognizance.

Governor John Carney announced on Saturday that Cade has been placed on paid administrative leave due to what he referred to as a “personal legal matter.” OMB Deputy Director Courtney Stewart has been appointed Acting Director of OMB while the situation is under review.

“Cerron has been a dedicated member of my team for years, so this is obviously a disappointment and a surprise,” said Governor Carney in a statement. “I am hopeful he can work through this challenge and return to his career in public service.”

The Department of Human Resources is conducting a review to determine if Cade’s actions violated the state’s employee conduct policy. The outcome of this review could result in further administrative actions.

The arrest comes less than a month after Cade was named Chief of Staff for Carney’s upcoming term as mayor. In light of the arrest, Tanny Washington, the current Chief of Staff, has agreed to remain in the position.

A court date for Cade is scheduled in January.
