Concord Pike Closed, Hundreds Without Power After Powerlines Brought Down

A section of Concord Pike (US Route 202) is closed Friday morning following an electrical emergency that has caused widespread power outages and traffic disruptions in the area.

The incident occurred around 9:19 AM near the 5100 block of Concord Pike when a dump truck traveling with its bed reportedly raised snagged power lines, pulling them down and causing a utility pole to break. As a result, Concord Pike is closed between Silverside Road and Naamans Road, creating a major traffic disruption.

First responders from the Delaware State Police, Talleyville Fire Company, DelDOT, and Delmarva Power are on the scene, working to address the situation. DelDOT crews and Fire Police are managing traffic control, while Delmarva Power is assessing damage and beginning repair work.

Power outages are affecting several businesses and residents in the area, including Concord Mall, Widener University, and surrounding establishments. Delmarva Power reports that over 400 customers are currently without electricity.

Additionally, multiple traffic signals in the vicinity are not functioning, exacerbating traffic challenges for morning commuters. Authorities have urged drivers to avoid the area and seek alternative routes.

This will be an extended closure, with no estimated time for reopening provided yet. Power restoration efforts are underway, but repairs to the damaged infrastructure are expected to take several hours.

Stay tuned for updates as the situation develops.
