Despite Losing Election Hall-Long Will Serve As Delaware’s 75th Governor

If Delaware Governor-elect Matt Meyer has created any “75th Governor of Delaware” merchandise, he’ll need to trash it. On Tuesday, an unusual political transition will make Meyer’s primary rival, Delaware’s 75th governor, albeit for a brief period.

Lt. Gov. Bethany Hall-Long, who faced off against Meyer in last year’s election, will assume the role of governor on January 7 following the resignation of Gov. John Carney. Carney will resign at noon on Tuesday to take on his new position as the Mayor of Wilmington.

Bethany Hall-Long, who has served as Delaware’s lieutenant governor since 2017, was endorsed by Carney during the primary. However, she lost the Democratic primary race to Meyer, who later won the general election against Republican Mike Ramone.

Matt Meyer will officially assume office later in January, which means Hall-Long will serve as governor for about two weeks.
