Wilmington Police have arrested a Maryland man following an extensive investigation into a fatal shooting that occurred in January 2024.
On January 22, 2024, officers from the Uniformed Services Division responded to reports of a shooting in the 300 block of North Scott Street. Upon arrival, they discovered 23-year-old Makhi Swanson suffering from gunshot wounds. Swanson was transported to a local hospital in critical condition but later succumbed to his injuries.
The investigation was led by Detective Brandon Mosley of the Criminal Investigations Division. Detective Mosley identified 20-year-old Naim Hassan-El of Snow Hill, Maryland, as a suspect in the case officials said Friday. The case was presented to the New Castle County Grand Jury on January 29, 2024, resulting in an indictment against Hassan-El.
Hassan-El was apprehended in Worcester County, Maryland, on October 30, 2024. Following his arrest, he was extradited to Delaware on December 31, 2024, to face charges.
Hassan-El is charged with Murder (First Degree), Attempted Murder (First Degree), Possession of a Firearm During the Commission of a Felony (Three Counts), and Reckless Endangering (First Degree).
He was arraigned in Justice of the Peace Court 20 and is being held at the Howard R. Young Correctional Institution on $2,000,000 cash-only bail.
