Update Here UD Confirms Officer Shot Armed Subject At Train Station – First State Update
Just before 4:45 p.m. on Sunday, rescue crews were dispatched to the Newark Regional Transportation Center (NRTC) at 100 Station Way in Newark. According to initial reports, police officers were already present at the scene when the call for assistance was made.
Shortly after the initial response, reports surfaced of a shooting at the location, situated near the University of Delaware’s sports complex on Route 896. At least a dozen officers responded, and one individual was transported to a nearby hospital with multiple gunshot wounds.
Sources in law enforcement tell FSU that a University of Delaware officer discharged her weapon during the incident. However, officials have not officially confirmed these details.
Newark Police clarified that their officers were not involved and that the incident was handled by the University of Delaware Police Department.
Officers from both the University of Delaware Police and Newark Police departments secured an area around a vehicle in the parking lot, where debris was observed. This location appears to have been where medics provided aid to the injured individual.
As required by the Clery Act, which mandates colleges and universities to report campus crime data, the University of Delaware documented the incident online on Monday. The entry reads:
“1/05/24 4:37 PM Aggravated Menacing/Possession of a Deadly Weapon NRTC Arrest.”
The entry appears to indicate that that the University of Delaware Police have formally charged the individual with Aggravated Menacing and Possession of a Deadly Weapon.
Despite this required report, the University of Delaware has not released further information about the incident. Additionally, authorities have not stated whether the officer involved sustained any injuries.
