Officials ID Newark Woman KilledIn Collision With Paramedics

On Wednesday, January 1, 2025, at approximately 2:33 a.m., officers from the New Castle County Division of Police were dispatched to a motor vehicle accident on I-95 southbound at the I-495 split involving years a New Castle County Paramedic vehicle.

Upon arrival, officers learned that New Castle County Paramedics were traveling southbound on I-95 at the I-495 interchange when they attempted to respond to an unrelated accident on the left shoulder of the interstate. The paramedics activated the emergency lights on their fully marked 2024 Ford F-350 New Castle County Paramedic vehicle and began changing lanes to approach another accident on I-95 and provide any necessary medical assistance when a collision occurred with a 2013 Nissan Altima. The Altima was driven by 33-year-old Kierra West from Newark and accompanied by a six-year-old male passenger.

Following the collision, the paramedic vehicle came to rest in a lane on I-95 while the Nissan Altima stopped on the left shoulder. Responding officers and emergency medical services immediately provided medical care to everyone involved.

Kierra West was pronounced deceased at the scene. Her six-year-old passenger was transported to Nemours Children’s Hospital with non-life-threatening injuries.

The driver and passenger of the New Castle County Paramedic vehicle were taken to Christiana Hospital, where they were listed in stable condition.

A tragic sequence of events unfolded early this morning on Interstate 95, claiming one life and leaving multiple individuals injured. The incident occurred at approximately 2:35 a.m. near the southbound split with Interstate 495, causing significant disruption.

Initial reports indicate that paramedics may have stopped at the scene of a prior accident to render assistance when they became involved in a secondary collision. Upon their arrival, the paramedics reported being involved in a crash and being trapped in their vehicle Both medics sustained injuries and were transported to Christiana Hospital, where they are currently reported to be in stable condition, according to a department spokesperson.

Emergency response crews from the Minquas Fire Company, Christiana Fire Company, Belvedere Fire Company, and Minquadale Fire Company, alongside New Castle County Police, were dispatched to the scene.

The crash resulted in the death of one individual, who was pronounced deceased at the scene. Additionally, a child was transported to AI DuPont Hospital for Children with injuries of unknown severity.

I-95 southbound at the I-495 split is closed while investigators work to determine the sequence of events leading to the collision.

The New Castle County Police Department has assumed responsibility for the investigation and is expected to release further updates as they become available.
