Red Clay Memo Addresses Concerns Over President Trump

The Red Clay Consolidated School District has apparently issued a memorandum to its leaders and staff addressing concerns related to immigration enforcement and federal laws affecting the LGBTQ community.

The concerns addressed in the Red Clay Consolidated School District’s memo arise in the context of broader national discussions surrounding immigration enforcement and federal policies on gender in sports.

The policies implemented by President Donald Trump’s administration include a strong stance on immigration and efforts to enforce Title IX regulations aimed at protecting women’s sports.

The memo purportedly issued by the “Office of Equity and Inclusion” and is floating around social media directs staff to:

Familiarize and share the School Board Resolution with anyone expressing concerns. As noted in the resolution, there are protections under [Plyler v. DOE (1982)] and FERPA that safeguard the release of student information.

Offer counseling support to students who may be experiencing anxiety or uncertainty. Be sensitive to students’ emotions, especially those who may feel heightened anxiety or fear. Be mindful of microaggressions and ensure you use inclusive language in classrooms and communications. Offer reassurance and create a calm, supportive atmosphere.

Collaborate with families to develop attendance and academic continuity plans when necessary.

Protect Privacy – Maintain confidentiality regarding student and family information. Avoid asking about immigration status or discussing personal details unless necessary for educational support.

Be Flexible – If families need to keep children home, help maintain educational continuity by preparing accessible materials and providing online resources where possible.

Offer Peer Support – Encourage student groups, such as Gender-Sexuality Alliances (GSAs) and multicultural clubs, to organize opportunities for connection and mutual support.

The memo also instructs staff to notify the Office of the Superintendent if U.S. Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE) contacts any school within the district.
