Traffic Stop Leads To Multiple Felony Charges For Two

The Delaware State Police arrested 27-year-old John Hernandez (R) of New Castle, Delaware, and 32-year-old Shakair Miller(L) of Wilmington, Delaware, on gun and drug charges following a traffic stop in Wilmington on Monday night.

Officials said on January 13, 2025, at approximately 7:00 p.m., members of the New Castle County Governor’s Task Force were patrolling South Market Street in Wilmington when they observed a Jeep Grand Cherokee with multiple equipment violations. Detectives conducted a traffic stop and made contact with the driver, identified as John Hernandez. A computer inquiry revealed Hernandez did not have a valid driver’s license police said. Detectives also made contact with the passenger, who initially provided a fictitious name and date of birth but was later identified as Shakair Miller according to police. A computer inquiry showed that Miller had an active capias for his arrest issued by the New Castle County Superior Court. Both Hernandez and Miller were subsequently taken into custody without incident.

Officials said during the stop, detectives conducted a search of the Jeep and its occupants, leading to the discovery of a loaded Ruger handgun concealed in a jacket in the rear passenger seat, approximately 42.4 grams of crack cocaine, 41 baggies containing approximately 1.23 grams of heroin, and various drug paraphernalia, including a digital scale and distribution/packaging materials. Hernandez and Miller were transported to Troop 2, where they were charged with multiple offenses.

John Hernandez was charged with possession with intent to manufacture or deliver a controlled substance in a Tier 3 quantity, possession of a controlled substance in a Tier 3 quantity, possession of a deadly weapon by a person prohibited who also possesses controlled substances, possession with intent to manufacture or deliver a controlled substance, carrying a concealed firearm, possession of a controlled substance in a Tier 1 quantity, possession of drug paraphernalia, driving without a valid license, and additional traffic violations. He was arraigned by Justice of the Peace Court 2 and committed to Howard R. Young Correctional Institution on a $142,320 cash bond.

Shakair Miller, a convicted felon prohibited from possessing firearms or ammunition, was charged with possession with intent to manufacture or deliver a controlled substance in a Tier 3 quantity, possession of a controlled substance in a Tier 3 quantity, possession of a deadly weapon by a person prohibited who also possesses controlled substances, possession with intent to manufacture or deliver a controlled substance, carrying a concealed firearm, possession of a controlled substance in a Tier 1 quantity, and making a false statement. He was arraigned by Justice of the Peace Court 2 and committed to Howard R. Young Correctional Institution on a $143,100 cash bond.
