The Delaware Fire Marshal’s Office is investigating a house fire on the 1700 block of Newport Gap Pike that left two individuals critically injured on Saturday afternoon.
Upon arrival, crews reported heavy fire showing from the home. Firefighters immediately initiated an attack to bring the flames under control while simultaneously searching the home for victims.
Lieutenant Abigail Haas, Public Information Officer for the New Castle County Paramedics, confirmed that crews from the Cranston Heights Fire Company, along with surrounding mutual aid fire companies, responded to the call at approximately 2:48 p.m. following reports of a structure fire with injuries. Upon arrival, crews encountered an active fire in a two-story structure.
According to Haas, two individuals sustained critical injuries. A 71-year-old female was treated on scene for smoke inhalation and burns before being transported to the hospital in critical condition. A 63-year-old male was also transported in critical condition, suffering from burns and possible smoke inhalation.
After extinguishing the main body of the fire, crews remained on scene to address lingering hot spots and conduct overhaul operations to ensure the fire was completely extinguished.
The Delaware State Fire Marshal’s Office is investigating the cause of the fire.
