Just before 4:45 p.m. on Sunday, emergency responders were dispatched to the Newark Regional Transportation Center (NRTC) at 100 Station Way following reports of a suicidal subject. Police officers were already on-site when the situation escalated, resulting in an officer-involved shooting.
The incident, which occurred across the street from the University of Delaware’s sports complex along Route 896, drew a significant law enforcement response. According to sources in law enforcement, a University of Delaware Police officer discharged their weapon after the subject reportedly approached the officer wielding a knife. Commands to drop the weapon were reportedly ignored, prompting the officer to fire. These are details the university confirmed Monday afternoon.
The subject, a 24-year-old Maryland man with no known ties to the University of Delaware, was struck multiple times. Despite the severity of the incident, his injuries are not believed to be life-threatening. Medics rendered aid at the scene, with officers from both the University of Delaware and Newark Police departments securing the area around a vehicle in the parking lot where debris was visible.
As per the Clery Act, which requires colleges and universities to document campus crime data, the University of Delaware logged the incident on Monday, describing it as:
“1/05/24 4:37 PM Aggravated Menacing/Possession of a Deadly Weapon NRTC Arrest.”
The man has been charged with Aggravated Menacing and Possession of a Deadly Weapon. The university confirmed that the officer involved has been placed on administrative duty, following standard departmental policy. The officer sustained no injuries during the confrontation.
