Final Workshop For Reimagined Kirkwood Highway Set For Monday

The Wilmington Area Planning Council (WILMAPCO) is set to host a final recommendations workshop for the Kirkwood Highway Land Use and Transportation Plan. The event will take place on Monday, February 24, 2025, from 4:30 p.m. to 6:30 p.m. at the Cranston Heights Fire Company, located at 3306 Kirkwood Highway, Wilmington, Delaware. A snow date has been scheduled for Wednesday, February 26, 2025.

Developed in collaboration with the Delaware Department of Transportation (DelDOT), Delaware Transit Corporation (DTC), and the New Castle County Department of Land Use, the Kirkwood Highway plan aims to establish a multimodal corridor that better serves compact community and business centers between Newark and Wilmington. The plan’s vision includes discouraging high traffic speeds while promoting safe access for all ages through improved infrastructure for walking, bicycling, rolling, and public transit. Additionally, economic development efforts will focus on transitioning from an auto-oriented design to a more bikeable and walkable environment, integrating affordable community-serving retail, services, and housing opportunities to accommodate the corridor’s diverse clientele.

The in-person workshop will feature presentations at 4:30 p.m. and 5:30 p.m., with attendees welcome to join at any time during the event which ends ay 6:30. Participants will have the opportunity to learn about the final recommendations for transportation enhancements and land use policies, as well as the projected timeline for implementation. The plan also emphasizes landscaping and open space improvements for both public and private properties, along with the creation of connected networks linking Kirkwood Highway’s business centers to adjacent neighborhoods, schools, and parks.

Community engagement has played a crucial role in shaping the plan, and WILMAPCO is encouraging all residents to participate in the workshop. Individuals requiring language or disability assistance are urged to contact WILMAPCO at [email protected] or call 302-737-6205 at least three business days before the event to ensure accommodations.
