Route 1 rollover crash sends one to hospital by air Wednesday

NEW CASTLE, DE – A serious motor vehicle collision early Wednesday morning resulted in a 51-year-old man being airlifted to the hospital after his vehicle crashed on Route 1 Southbound at the Route 72 overpass.

Emergency crews were dispatched at approximately 6:17 AM, with units from New Castle County Paramedics, Delaware City Fire Company, Port Penn Fire Company, and Christiana Fire Company responding to the scene. Upon arrival, first responders found the driver trapped inside his vehicle. Fire crews quickly worked to extricate the victim while paramedics assessed his condition.

Several readers responded to FSU’s original post and also contacted us to say that a white van abruptly took a hard turn and crossed over into the southbound lanes before rolling over. In their statement, officials did not confirm those details.

The patient, suffering from possible head and chest injuries, was treated at the scene before being transported in serious condition to Christiana Hospital in Stanton. The Delaware State Police Aviation Unit provided air transport for the injured driver.

The Delaware State Police are currently investigating the cause of the crash.
