The Delaware State Police Aviation Section has launched a statewide Pre-Hospital Whole Blood Program in collaboration with the Blood Bank of Delmarva, enhancing emergency medical response capabilities. This initiative allows trooper medics to administer whole blood transfusions directly at emergency scenes, improving survival rates for trauma patients across the state.
The program was developed following a pilot project in 2023 that tested the effectiveness of pre-hospital whole blood transfusions in New Castle and Sussex counties. Based on the success of the trial, the initiative was expanded statewide, with Advanced Life Support agencies now authorized to carry and administer whole blood. Emergency medical teams have undergone specialized training to ensure proper handling and delivery of the life-saving treatment.
The addition of whole blood transfusions to pre-hospital care is expected to significantly impact trauma response. The ability to provide immediate transfusions before patients reach a hospital can help stabilize critical cases and reduce fatalities. The program is supported by ongoing blood donations, which are essential for maintaining an adequate supply for emergency use.
This expansion builds upon the progress already made in Delaware’s emergency medical system. By the end of 2024, paramedics statewide had administered 250 units of whole blood in pre-hospital settings. Emergency medical services in New Castle and Sussex counties had reached significant milestones, while Kent County delivered its first unit officials announced at the end of 2024.
