A student brought an unloaded firearm to Frederick Douglass Elementary School in Seaford on Tuesday morning, prompting an immediate response from school staff and law enforcement according to a email sent to parents.
The school district released the following statement regarding the incident:
“This morning, a serious incident occurred at Frederick Douglass Elementary School when a student brought an unloaded firearm to school. The student was dropped off as a car rider and did not ride a bus. School staff were alerted to the situation after entering the building and immediately followed all safety protocols.
We are grateful for the vigilance of our staff, constable, and the prompt response of law enforcement in handling this situation. We are also thankful to the students who reported the incident to teachers.
We recognize that school safety is a shared responsibility between the district, families, and the community. We urge all parents and guardians to take necessary precautions to ensure firearms are stored securely and kept out of the reach of children.
We understand that this news is very concerning for our school community. We had already considered the necessity for weapons detections systems across all our district schools – this incident has accelerated the conversation. We appreciate the partnership of our parents and community members in maintaining a safe school environment for all and look forward to your input and continued support.”
