Officials Identify Human Remains Found In Newark

Wilmington, DE – Authorities have confirmed that human remains discovered earlier this month in the Red Mill Farms area near Capitol Trail and Red Mill Road are those of Cintoria Griffin, a Wilmington woman who had been missing since June 2023.

Griffin, 58, was last seen on June 11, 2023, at approximately 5:30 p.m. after boarding a bus in the 1000 block of North Market Street in Wilmington. Investigators later determined that she exited the bus near Kirkwood Highway and Delaplane Avenue, just outside Newark. She was last seen wearing a multi-color dress, gold sandals, and carrying a green bag.

In early March 2025, First State Update reported an active investigation in the area of Capitol Trail and Red Mill Road along Cordele Road, prompting questions from the public. New Castle County Police later confirmed that detectives were investigating the possible discovery of human remains in the area. A terrain search was conducted along Capitol Trail between Fairway Road and Polly Drummond Hill Road, with law enforcement cautioning that intermittent lane closures could result in traffic delays.

On Monday, March 31, 2025, authorities confirmed that the remains located behind a home on Cordele Road were those of Cintoria Griffin. The location where her remains were discovered is approximately two blocks from the intersection of Kirkwood Highway and Delaplane Avenue, the last place she was known to have been seen. The identification was first reported by The News Journal. Wilmington Police subsequently removed Griffin’s Gold Alert from their website.

Officials have not released further details regarding the circumstances of Griffin’s death. The investigation remains ongoing.
