Police Identify Bicyclist Killed In Collision With Box Truck Tuesday

Delaware State Police are investigating a fatal crash involving a bicyclist yesterday in Lewes.

Officials said on March 11, 2025, at approximately 12:57 p.m., a Hino ST box truck was traveling northbound on Venables Drive approaching Senators Drive in Lewes. At the same time, a bicyclist was traveling northbound, on a paved bicycle path that parallels Venables Drive, approaching Senators Drive.

Troopers said the preliminary investigation indicated that as the box truck turned eastbound onto Senators Drive, the bicyclist entered Senators Drive. The bicyclist tried to avoid the collision but hit the right rear of the box truck.

The bicyclist, 68-year-old Steve Carpenter, of Milton, taken to an area hospital by ambulance, where he died.

The driver of the Hino box truck, a 26-year-old Wilmington man and a passenger, a 27-year-old New Castle man were not injured.

The roadway was closed for approximately two hours while the scene was investigated and cleared.
