Man Charged With DUI, Child Endangerment, Released Without Bond

On Monday, March 24, at approximately 7:43 p.m., Lewes Police Department officers conducting routine patrol near Lewes Beach observed a silver Toyota traveling the wrong way on Bayview Avenue without its headlights activated.

Officers conducted a traffic stop and made contact with the driver, identified as 28-year-old Miguel Garay of Gaithersburg, Maryland.

Upon approaching the vehicle, officers detected a strong odor of burnt marijuana and observed signs indicating that Garay was under the influence of an unknown substance. Garay was administered standard field sobriety tests, which he failed according to police. He was subsequently taken into custody.

A search of the vehicle resulted in the confiscation of two THC vape cartridges. During the stop, officers also discovered that a one-year-old child was unrestrained in the back seat and being held by a female passenger.

Garay was charged with Driving a Vehicle Under the Influence of a Drug, Endangering the Welfare of a Child by Intentionally, Knowingly, or Recklessly Acting in a Manner Likely to Injure, Failure to Use Headlights When Required, Driving the Wrong Way on a One-Way Road, and Failure to Use a Child Restraint.

He was released without bond pending further court proceedings.
