New Online Service Could Save Thousands Of Trips To The DMV

The Delaware Division of Motor Vehicles has announced the launch of a new online service that allows vehicle owners to retain their license plate when selling a vehicle out of state. This enhancement is now available through the DMV’s official website, dmv.de.gov, under the online services section.

Delaware residents with an unexpired tag who sell their vehicle outside the state can now retain their plate by completing a form online. Once the form is submitted and validated, the license plate will be placed in retention status, provided the tag is still valid at the time of submission.

According to the Delaware Department of Transportation, this online option is intended to improve customer service by eliminating the need for in-person visits related to out-of-state vehicle sales. The DMV processes an estimated 8,600 such transactions annually. By transitioning this service online, thousands of trips to DMV facilities are expected to be avoided, reducing lobby wait times and streamlining service delivery.

Customers seeking additional details on reporting an out-of-state sale or to start the process of retaining their tag can visit dmv.de.gov/app/dmv/sos. Further information on tag retention procedures is also available at dmv.de.gov/VehicleServices/tag-retention.
