A shooting at in the area of 3000 Stone Place in Newark triggered a large-scale police response and multi-jurisdictional pursuit Tuesday evening.
Authorities began receiving complaints just before 7:00, regarding a group of individuals being loud and smoking marijuana according to sources familiar with the incident.
Around 20 minutes later, 911 calls escalated to reports of gunfire. Witnesses reported hearing multiple gunshots followed by an additional volley of multiple shots. People were seen fleeing the scene in various directions and vehicles, including a black Dodge Charger, sources tell FSU.
Officers later located the suspect Charger nearby, prompting a high-speed vehicle pursuit. The Charger fled westbound on Route 2, reportedly reaching speeds over 80 mph at times. The vehicle traveled through Newark, and eventually toward South Chapel Street, where it crashed and its occupants bailed into a nearby field.
It was just before 8:00 when officers initiated a foot pursuit involving four males dressed in black. A perimeter was established with aerial support from Trooper 4. Minutes later at least three individuals were in custody near the railroad tracks that run along South Chaple Street. One was taken into custody after being tased according to sources. Officers reportedly recovered firearms from the Dodge Charger, FSU has not confirmed those details.
Nearby, a Toyota Highlander was located with at least one victim, believed to have been injured in the crash, an 18-year-old male. The man was transported to Christiana Emergency Room, reportedly with head and neck injuries.
Throughout the response, multiple roads in the area were shut down. Additional units were deployed to assist by multiple agencies.
There are indications that they have been more accidents during the chase. This is a developing story we will update as more information becomes available.
