Wilmington Police are investigating reports of criminal activity and a large, disorderly crowd that formed following the annual Hispanic Day Parade on Sunday.
According to officials, shortly after 4 p.m., as the parade concluded, police began receiving multiple calls for service in the area of 4th and Dupont Streets. Callers reported fights, drunk and disorderly individuals, and subjects armed with firearms police said Monday. As the evening progressed, the number of incidents grew, and officers encountered a crowd estimated at between 1,000 and 1,500 people. Police said the group refused repeated orders to disperse.
Officers reported that members of the crowd threw rocks, bottles, and other objects, and that cars and off-highway vehicles were operated recklessly through the streets. At one point, multiple gunshots were fired.
The size of the crowd prompted assistance from neighboring agencies, including Delaware State Police, New Castle County Police, and New Castle City Police. With the combined law enforcement response, the crowd was dispersed by approximately 9 p.m. Authorities said no injuries were reported.
Sources indicated that an armored BearCat vehicle deployed during the incident may have been struck by gunfire. Police did not confirm that detail in their official statement.
The incident remains under investigation, and authorities have not announced any arrests. Police have not released further information regarding the criminal activity reported during the disturbance.
