The southbound span of the Delaware Memorial Bridge was closed for several hours early Saturday morning following a two-vehicle collision that occurred around 3:00 a.m.
According to the Delaware River and Bay Authority, a box truck became disabled in the right lane on the upgrade of the Delaware-bound span when a truck tractor hauling two pup trailers swerved left in an attempt to avoid a collision but struck the rear of the disabled vehicle. The crash blocked all lanes of traffic.
Both drivers sustained minor injuries and were transported by ambulance to a nearby hospital for evaluation. The box truck’s cargo, consisting of bulk grocery items, was scattered across the bridge, and one of the truck tractor’s saddle tanks ruptured, spilling diesel fuel onto the roadway.
Cleanup and recovery operations kept all lanes closed until approximately 8:15 a.m. The bridge fully reopened once the scene was cleared, and traffic delays dissipated within about 30 minutes after that according to James Salmon the Director of Communications for the Delaware River and Bay Authority.
