Police: Armed Teen In Custody After Struggle

Police made an arrest Saturday afternoon following a pedestrian stop involving two teenagers near Airport Road and Appleby Road.

According to the New Castle County Police, officers were patrolling the area at approximately 1:30 p.m. on November 29 when they observed two individuals believed to match the description of suspects connected to a criminal incident reported the previous day. Officers conducted a pedestrian stop and identified the individuals as a 17-year-old male and a 16-year-old male.

Police said the 17-year-old began exhibiting erratic behavior during the encounter. Officers determined he would be detained for further investigation, at which point he physically resisted, leading to a brief struggle before officers gained control and took him into custody.

After the teen was secured, officers located a loaded 9mm handgun tucked into his waistband police said. The firearm was found to have a 3D-printed lower receiver and was loaded with a 10-round magazine, with an additional round chambered, police said.

The 16-year-old male was not charged and was released at the scene.

The 17-year-old was charged with two felony counts of possession of a firearm or ammunition by a person prohibited, one felony count of possession of a firearm by a person under 21, one felony count of possession of ammunition by a person under 21, one felony count of possession of a firearm during the commission of a felony, one felony count of carrying a concealed deadly weapon, and one felony count of resisting arrest.

He was arraigned by Justice of the Peace Court 11 and committed to the New Castle County Detention Center after failing to post $65,000 cash bail.
