Troopers ID Bicyclist Killed In Accident Sunday

A bicyclist has died following a crash Sunday night in Sussex County, according to the Delaware State Police.

The collision occurred on April 19, 2026, at approximately 9:10 p.m. on Shiloh Church Road near Turkey Knob Road in the Laurel area. Investigators said Jose Calvo Velasquez was riding a bicycle westbound in the travel lane when he was struck by a westbound Ford Explorer. The front right portion of the SUV hit the bicycle, ejecting him from the roadway.

Velasquez, 26, of Laurel, was transported to a nearby hospital, where he later died from his injuries.

The driver of the Ford Explorer, a 75-year-old man from Delmar, was not injured.

The roadway was closed for approximately three hours as troopers investigated and cleared the scene. The crash remains under investigation.
