Police: Man Charged In New Castle City Rape, Gunfire

Following an investigation, detectives with the New Castle City Police Department have arrested a suspect in connection with a violent sexual assault that occurred last month.

Officials said shortly after midnight on July 20th, New Castle City Police officers were dispatched to the 700 block of Frenchtown Road for the report of a sexual assault that had just occurred. Officers located the victim, who reported having met the suspect through an online platform before arranging to meet in person officials said.

During the encounter, the suspect drove the victim to an area near Frenchtown Road where he allegedly produced a firearm and forcibly compelled the victim to engage in sexual acts against their will according to police. During a struggle, a firearm was discharged. The victim was able to escape on foot and flag down help. As the victim fled, the suspect discharged the firearm before fleeing the area, according to police.

Detectives initiated an investigation that ultimately led to the suspect, identified as Markquail Harris, 29 of Levittown, PA, officials said.

He has been charged with multiple felony offenses, including Rape First Degree, along with additional related charges. He was committed to the Howard R Young Correctional Center in lieu of $615,000 cash bail.

The investigation remains active, and additional charges may be forthcoming police said.
