Motorists traveling through New Castle County should prepare for several weeks of traffic disruptions as the U.S. Army Corps of Engineers prepares to begin maintenance work on the St. Georges Bridge, which carries U.S. Route 13 over the Chesapeake and Delaware Canal.
Beginning Monday, November 9, 2026, the bridge will be closed to southbound traffic. That closure is expected to remain in place until approximately November 30.
A full northbound closure will follow in late November or early December, with maintenance work expected to be completed by mid-December.
The closures will affect one direction at a time. The Army Corps said its contractor will accommodate bicycles and emergency vehicles crossing the bridge during the closures.
All dates are approximate and could change depending on weather conditions and other factors.
Motorists should plan for alternate routes and possible delays throughout the maintenance period.
