Rehoboth Beach – The Delaware State Police are continuing to investigate a serious motor vehicle crash involving a vehicle and a scooter on Coastal Highway (SR1) northbound at Robinsons Drive, according to Public Information Officer, Master Corporal Gary Fournier.
Fournier said the incident occurred around 10:56 a.m. Saturday July 29, 2017 as Laura L. Mason, 45 of Rehoboth, was operating a 2014 Jeep Grand Cherokee stopped in the left turn lane of southbound Coastal Highway (SR1) at the intersection of Robinson’s Drive. Kenneth J. Seltzer Jr., 27 of Rehoboth, was operating a 2012 Honda Ruckus Moped northbound on Coastal Highway on the shoulder approaching the same intersection. Prior to the collision, traffic on Coastal Highway was extremely congested in both directions. Northbound traffic stopped to allow the Cherokee across the intersection and as the Jeep started to cross both northbound lanes of Coastal Highway, the operator failed to see the moped traveling northbound on the shoulder and crossed directly in front of him, according to Fournier. As a result, the front of the moped struck the right side of the Jeep directly on the passenger’s side door. After the impact, Seltzer was ejected from his moped and came to rest on the northbound shoulder. The Jeep continuing turning left onto Robinson’s Drive and came to a controlled stop in the parking lot of the Just in Thyme Restaurant.
Laura Mason was properly restrained and uninjured in the collision.
Kenneth Seltzer was not wearing a helmet and was initially transported to Beebe Healthcare in Lewes before being airlifted to Christiana Medical Center in Stanton where he is currently listed in critical condition.
The Delaware State Police Collision Reconstruction Unit is investigating this incident and no charges have been filed at this time. Alcohol or drugs do not appear to be contributing factors in this case. SR1 northbound at Robinsons Drive was restricted to one lane for approximately three hours while the crash was investigated and cleared.
