Fire Marshal: UD Fraternity Fire Was Arson, Authorities Seeking Help Identifying These Suspects

Newark – State fire investigators from the Delaware State Fire Marshal’s office are seeking the public’s assistance in identifying a suspect vehicle and occupants caught on video tape fleeing from a Newark, Delaware arson on August 22, 2017, according to Assistant State Fire Marshal Michael G. Chionchio.

Chionchio said the Aetna Hose, Hook and Ladder Company responded to a building fire in the unit block of Amstel Avenue shortly before 5:30 pm on August 22nd. Firefighters extinguished a fire on the exterior of the building.

State fire investigators responded to the scene. The fire was declared an arson when investigators determined that furniture on the exterior of the building was intentionally ignited and left to burn next to the occupied building, said Chionchio. Fire damage to the building was estimated at $8,000. There were no reported injuries.

The suspects and suspect vehicle were caught on surveillance cameras. Anyone with information regarding this fire and the identity of the suspects is asked to contact the State Fire Marshal’s – New Castle Division at (302) 323-5375 or Crime Stoppers at (800) TIP-3333.

Newark – Just before 5:30 pm this evening fire crews from Aetna Hose, Hook and Ladder, Mill Creek, Cranston Heights and Christiana Fire Companies responded to reports of a fire at University of Delaware dormitory (Smith Hall).

Arriving units found the fire across the street at Kappa Alpha Fraternity, located at 19 Amstel Avenue, not in Smith Hall.


Crews searched the home for injured occupants while they quickly extinguished the outside trash fire. The fire damaged parts of the exterior, along with minor damage to the interior. No injuries were reported.

Radio traffic indicated that the fire marshal was requested to investigate the fire.
