Woman Killed Crossing Route 40 In New Castle

New Castle – The Delaware State Police Collision Reconstruction Unit is investigating a motor vehicle crash in which a pedestrian has been struck and killed, according to Public Information Officer, Master Corporal Michael Austin.

Austin said the incident occurred at approximately 5:31 p.m., Thursday, November 16, 2017, on U.S. 40 (Pulaski Highway), westbound, east of the intersection with Wilton Boulevard, New Castle.

A 2004 Acura TL, being driven by a 38-year-old Newark man, was traveling U.S. 40 westbound approaching Wilton Boulevard. A pedestrian, identified as Rosa Martinez, 67, of New Castle, was walking northbound across the westbound lanes of U.S. 40, when she was struck by the Acura, according to Austin. After impact the Acura came to a controlled stop and remained at the scene. Martinez was treated on scene by New Castle County Paramedics before being transported to Christiana Hospital where she succumbed to her injuries.

The initial investigation has revealed that the victim was wearing all dark clothing at the time of the collision. It was also determined that she was crossing the roadway against a red signal, and without utilizing a designated pedestrian crosswalk, said Austin. At this time impairment on behalf of the victim is unknown.

Impairment is not being considered a factor on behalf of the Acura driver.

New Castle – Rescue crews from the Wilmington Manor Fire Company, along with Delaware State Troopers have responded to Route 40 WB near the 13/40 split (in front of the Walmart) for reports of a pedestrian struck by a vehicle.

Arriving crews have found the patient with serious injuries and are currently treating them on scene.

Avoid the area.

Update: Troopers have closed Route 40 WB at Appleby Road to investigate. All Route 40 wb traffic is being diverted into the WalMart parking lot.
